I'd echo Mister Write. I was going to suggest deleting every other word but why take risks? Every third word it will be. (Consider watching around 1:09 of http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cEWJ0c4Oi9k for inspiration :))

I'm at 271 right now, so maybe I'll just delete all of the articles as a start. If I just capitalize 'penguin' it becomes a name—no need for 'a' or 'the'.

I'm at the point where it's probably time to take a break. Right now every line feels essential, but that's just not true. And some of those that are can be reconfigured. I also have six words I know I could cut, but I am saving them for later.

Update: I plugged it into Submittable to see what it would say. Currently 8 words over.

It's one word in German.  Two in Estonian.

You laugh, but I have Crime and Punishment in Russian.  There's a reason I'll still read translations, preferably one that was done at least in part by a native speaker.  I'm picky about my translators.

Speaking Russian and understanding it are two different things; a classic example was that short movie I translated.  Woman opens the door and says 'otkriti', which means 'open' in Russian.  What that means to me (the door is open) is not what that means to a native speaker (we're holding a funeral).

To a westerner traditional Russian funerary practices are pretty...strange...
