AW, you ladies you know how to make a girl blush! Embarrassed Thanks for the lovely words, and I'm stoked to play with y'all again in a few weeks for rhyming. I've sorely missed beta banter and soaking in some top notch writing. Can't wait friends! x Hug

I just realized it is entirely possible I will lose power this weekend due to winds inland from Hurricane Ophelia, so this should add to the challenge! Charging up all auxiliary power packs!

I wrote a story for a different comp a couple months back. It was a very personal story for me, and I put a lot of myself into it. Almost 4 years ago, I lost the love of my life to cancer. And two years ago my best friend passed away from diabetic complications. Her husband had also passed 5 years before she did. I wrote a romantic story about loss. The main characters were based on Troye and I, and also Bill and Jim. Many of the things they experienced were pulled directly from our lives. And it was set in a place that meant a lot to me. It was very cathartic, and I shed a lot of tears writing it.

The feedback I got from the judges was 100% positive and encouraging. The only negative they had was that they wanted to know more about my characters, and even mentioned that they understood about how that would be difficult given the word limit. They said they loved my syntax and imagery and pretty much everything about my story. And it didn't place. Or even get an honorable mention.

So, yeah. I was gutted. I was ready to give up completely on writing. Or at least stop entering contests and/or sharing anything I wrote. If I hadn't already paid the entry fee, I would not have even written for Flash. But I did,  and then messed up and got a DQ in round 1 Disapprove At that point I definitely wanted to "chuck it in the f**k-it bucket". But I didn't, and wrote for round 2, and managed to get my 1st ever placement. Just a few points, but enough to keep me going for a bit longer.

Hey, I'm happy for you that you received points on your latest submission. I've washed out with nothing on a few occasions, and sometimes I've felt gutted about it (at other times, I shrug and move on without a second thought). Many of us know how disheartening it can, all the more so if you've got an emotional tie to a piece. Also, sorry for all of your losses.

I'm glad you didn't give up, and not only that, you fought back after a DQ and just wrote because you were moved to write. For the challenge. For the creativity. Because it was something to do. Because you've paid the entry fee already. Whatever the reason, you did it. Sometimes, just producing and submitting is a victory, but it's nice that the judges also recognized you.

Last year, I placed in Flash so unexpectedly. It was one of the BEST days I had in the entire year (and this was a year when my youngest graduated and moved off the payroll and my husband and I took an empty-nester trip to Europe, AND placing in Flash still felt evenmore amazing than all of that maybe because it was a personal victory).

Good news in a writing competition can feel amazing and validating. Please carry around that feeling!
