A quick and dirty math hack to feel some control over your word count in the Rhyming Story Challenge.

Example:

“There once was a story in rhyme,
That I wrote in a limited time.
The word count was under,
Which felt like a blunder.
Yet having too many’s a crime!”

The stanza above is 30 words.

The word limit is 500 words.

500/30 means that one could write 16 stanzas just like this with 20 words as a buffer. So write your first stanza, count the number of words and then divide it into the total.

KNOWING that you have - in this example - approximately 16 stanzas to write your story you can actually use that to “map out” your story to a degree. This might help you to not get into the weeds on, say, a plot point or a scene or a description and use up too many words or stanzas.

This doesn’t always work, of course; but it has helped me stay more on track as I enter successive Rhyming Story contests.

Hope this helps!

Great advice! While it should be obvious, it's something I only worked out about 3/4 of the way through my most recent rhyming story, and had to take a few drastic measures (making the original first paragraph the synopsis, for example) in order to get it all to fit.

It's something I'll be doing more consciously next time for sure though!

I wholeheartedly agree. I use this approach on every rhyming submission. Conceptualize the story enough to write a first stanza. Use the first stanza to lock the rhyme scheme. Count the words to calculate number of stanzas, and then map the "beats" (story arc) loosely to stanza numbers and start writing from there. Given how tedious it can be to craft clever rhymes that, this approach keeps me on a relatively straight and narrow path.

I think you put it much more succinctly than I did, Bob! And I could see the benefits of your approach in your round 2 story. Well done.

Like Ben Daggers, I only figured this out near the end of writing my R2 piece. I wish I’d had this advice a couple of rounds ago!

Oh well, I’ve still had fun messing about with the process.

Now, where can I submit these pieces once the comp is finished?
