Oh, that's easy.  Just turn on Fox News for inspiration.  LOL

I'm back after a bit of a hiatus, and looking forward to participating!!!

Hoping I don't get mystery, crime caper, or spy. Anything else is okay.

Honestly, I think I've gotten all the genres I dread already except for spy.  So. Like. That's probably what I'll get.

I really hope I don't get political satire or fantasy. I hate those genres with a fiery passion. Knowing my luck in the past I'll probably get one of them.

Spy: My associations with spy are bad. While I know there is much more to the genre than Bourne and Bond, my exposure has largely been to the aspects of spy which cater to male fantasy--aspects I have a toxic relationship with, I guess.

I also hate spy. When I got it in Short Story it got me knocked out, so when I got it again in round 2 of Flash Fiction I felt doomed. I went in with an "Eff it" mentality and wrote a story about Amish people and tomato plants that technically had some spy elements (one was spying on the other and sabotaged his tomatoes for the harvest festival). No spy gadgets, no real intrigue, no "Bond girls" or guns or really any sort of danger.

I placed first.

I think in Short Story, the year I got bumped with my more traditional espionage story, one of the ones that advanced was set in an office where a woman accidentally sent an embarrassing email to her boss and was trying to delete it from his computer before he read it.

So I think the genre's more forgiving than it might seem on the surface!

I had a similar experience. The first year I did the Short Story contest, I got 'Spy' in Round 1, and wrote a traditional spy story, set in the 1980s, featuring actual Russian spies. I got knocked out (with an HM though).

In my third year, I made it through to Round 2, and got 'Spy' again. This time, I did a more creative take on the genre. My story was about two dinner party guests who search their hosts' house for a secret family recipe that they want to copy. I placed first.

So I am no longer afraid of the 'Spy' genre! The genre that I really don't want to get is 'Fairy Tale'. It's just not my cup of tea - too whimsical - and something I have little interest in writing.

I just pulled fairy tale. I don't mind, but I had hoped to pull something meatier for the first round of short story. 2500 words is room to add some depth, and while that's possible in fairy tale, I have to watch straying too far from the genre. For flash or micros I'd be happier to draw it.
