Horror/a rodeo/a tale-teller
I did submit but I am not at all convinced it fits the genre. My kid did describe it as creepy so maybe that is a nod in the right direction? I am glad I finished it and do plan on posting…I don’t always do that but I am looking forward to other’s thoughts on it and ANY insight on how to create an actual horror story!

@nod1v1ng you should be an Australian. One of the largest internet dating sites in Oz is rsvp.com.au That alone would open up new opportunities for romance!

Wow I'm proud of you for submitting at all. I didn't.
Something to do with being on the wrong side of the world away from husband and kids, sorting out Dad's estate in a foreign language and with two wills for different countries with different inheritance laws, visiting my mother in hospital for the second time and her still not recognising me. I hadn't seen her since before COVID and dementia is cruel. And my flights home were cancelled and then they told me that guardianship for my mother would take 5-6 months to sort out. I might have tackled a 250 word microfiction, but anything longer than that was beyond me. I actually thought about offering my spot to someone I saw on here had failed to register due to ADHD, but I couldn't find the post quickly so failed on that too. Next year will be better. ...I feel like I said that at the start of 2021, and at the start of 2022. If I keep saying it I'm bound to be right sooner or later. |

That is a lot to be going on in your life. I hope things start untangling for you soon. I did ask NYCM if someone can give their spot in the competition to another writer, and they said no, so at least you didn't miss the opportunity on that.

The one thing I hoped I would not get was pol/sat. Welp! First time in the challenge and boom. It was a good political week to write satire though with the voting rights bill on the floor. I had dietary supplement and a newsboy. I took it in pieces. Developed my characters in my head. Then let them talk to me for a few days before the conflict worked it’s own way out. The hardest part was trying to decide how to make them all seem ridiculous without writing straight news. But I think I managed it.

I was given Drama, and the character of a card dealer.
the character of a card dealer suggests thriller or crime fiction, but these are separate genres. Aren't most of the other genres a subset of Drama? The essence of drama is conflict, which is true of other genres. How much overlap is allowed? Strictly 'drama' refers to performance arts: theatre, cinema, TV.

Did you take a look at the genre definitions on the NYCM website? I think the key line is 'relies on the emotional and relational development of realistic characters'. You could add elements of pretty much any other genre (one of the most successful writers here will happily tell you she turns nearly everything into SF/F), provided the primary focus is the characters and the relationships between them.
