Question out of curiosity... did anyone actually write more than one (completely distinct) finished story because something bugged you about the first?  (asking for a friend...)

I wrote 2,000 words of a story that I thought would be excellent. The minute I got the prompts, the story hit my head almost fully formed. I thought/wrote/thought/wrote for three days. My beta readers HATED it. I didn't hate it but I knew I had it in me to do better. I started over from scratch with a completely different idea on Wednesday. I didn't sleep Wednesday or Thursday night and was almost incoherent on Friday. My husband forced me to go to bed for a few hours. I finished the second story on Saturday morning and submitted it. Unfortunately, I kept tinkering with it multiple times after the first submission and I think I tinkered my way out of any possibility of making it to the second round.

My first story idea was good but it was flash fiction good and not short story good. In other words, it didn't have the legs to be a 2,500 word story and I didn't fully realize it until it was kind of too late.

Hi former heatmate!
Yes, I did that in flash for the first round. The first story was more AA then thriller so I wrote a completely different story the next day. Have only done one other SS competition so it hasn't happened yet, but I imagine it could.

Hey there... btw I really enjoyed "First, Do No Harm" :)  Great to see you again

Yeah, I definitely do NOT recommend it as a process lol

Wow, so you can relate!  Well, I hope what you ended up submitting winds up exceeding your expectations... good luck!
