I'll start.

I had insects freed from a spider web.

I had butterflies - and spent far too long debating whether insects were “animals”

I see many others went for insects too...

I had a similar though with regard to humans. Biologically, humans are obviously animals. But the word 'animal' is also used to mean animals as distinct from humans. Likewise, insects are arthropods in the kingdom Animalia, but something like, "I don't want to sleep out here with the insects and the animals" doesn't sound redundant.

That said, you just need to have a valid interpretation of the prompts, and a biological definition of animal definitely counts. I think that's actually mentioned in the competition FAQ for one of the prompts: if in doubt, look it up in the dictionary and use one of the definitions provided (I think for the subject prompt in short story).

I went for rat. It is not the main focus of the story but I spent a disproportionate amount of time researching which animal made the most sense in context of my story.

(Like others, I nearly went for human, as that did also fit the story, but I decided that interpretation just made the story way too depressing and not even slightly enjoyable to read.)
