It can't be too hard to copy and paste that form regarding such things as for spelling, grammar, story content/originality etc? Whilst some judges may be specific about such flaws, others are not.
This nonsense with judges commenting on things that they shouldn't is not helpful and should not happen, not just be answered here with a 'don't worry, it doesn't count.' Of course it counts, a judge has found it important enough to comment on as a negative. Please share the rubric with us and maybe more will comment on judge feedback which will help you. Not enough do that right now, regarding inappropriate or unhelpful feedback.
Thanks

100% this. Thank you, NYCNewbie.

Sorry for any confusion regarding the word count in the feedback!  It is true that the official count is based on the Submittable upload form and it does not allow stories over 100 words to be submitted, so there should be no disqualifications for word count if a story was uploaded successfully.  That being said, a few of our judges continued to verify using Word and/or Google Docs (we take the lower count of the two for the official count on our Short Story and Flash Fiction competitions).

The judging forms still allowed judges to flag an entry for disqualification for improper use of genre, action, word, and overall word count.  But, flagging a story for disqualification does not affect the score.  Competition organizers review all disqualifications and make the final decision as to whether it stands or is overturned.  There were no stories disqualified for exceeding the 100-word limit.  We also have started adding a note at the end of the feedback to verify if a story was disqualified.

We hope this helps, but please let us know if you have any other questions or need anything else.  Sorry again for the confusion in the feedback and thank you for participating!
If Submittable accepts the upload, why would a judge even waste his/her time re-checking? They have more important duties to perform. Double-checking something that Submittable already cleared seems like a ridiculous waste of valuable time that should be devoted to reading and judging. Your reply in this case just makes no sense to me... but it does further my feelings of discontent with the whole judging process here. Considering all of the negative feedback that's been flying around the Forum in the past few months, I would think that the Powers-That-Be at NYC Midnight would be looking at ways to positively resolve the growing problems people are having with the judging process.
I totally agree.
I also think that the rubric regarding points awarded etc. should be shared with us. NYCMidnight, you shared here about a form being filled in. Many of us are new writers, trying to hone our craft. How can we really improve if we don't know how we did against the judging criteria?

Of course it counts, a judge has found it important enough to comment on as a negative. These things bother us when we go into the next round or competition. Please share the rubric with us and maybe more will comment on judge feedback which will help you. Not enough do that right now, regarding inappropriate or unhelpful feedback.

Hi,

I received an email with the judges' feedback yesterday. I'd email NYC directly. Hope this helps.

The judges do not have the ability to deduct points based on word count, but we agree that if that was the only feedback provided, its not very helpful.  Please send us an email at feedback@nycmidnight.com so that we can look into it further.  Thank you and sorry again for any disappointment with your feedback!

Thank you for your response, but I’m afraid it doesn’t address my question. Despite the fact that my story didn’t move on, this judge says “no criticisms” other than the fact that I should reduce my word count by six to be “much improved.” This suggests a lower score based upon their mistaken word count. That’s disappointing.

Hi there. I have no problem with not advancing past the second round of the Micro, but one of the judges {1973} gave feedback that I'd like clarification on:

"The story is six words over the maximum word count--if the author can decide which six to cut, this story would be much improved. Otherwise, no serious criticisms."

How is this even possible? Submittable won't allow more than 100 words for the micro challenge. If this judge DQ'd me or seriously marked me down -- I'm looking at 'would be much improved' here -- would it have made a difference in the group rankings?
