I agree. From what I've seen the stories the judges like are pretty unpredictable and in many cases I think they are wrong! lol. So my advice is write something for yourself that you could use for a longer story and submit to other publishers! In other words... Hedge your bets

This is also my first time playing. Going into round 3 and I've decided to just lean into my natural weirdness, honestly. The elements I've been complimented on the most so far in my submissions have been from aspects of my style that can go either way with readers.
In my first round, I wrote in a few hours, edited myself, and submitted. Second round I slaved all weekend and used multiple beta readers. My first round scored better, and I think overall I was happier - not with the story, but with the edits I made to it, versus what I did based off the advice of others. So, like someone else mentioned, I've decided to treat it like a bonus. I'm going to put out the work I can be happiest with and feel is the most "me" and then see what happens :) Good luck!

The only advice I can really think of is for any round: make sure you have time to get someone to look over your piece. The one year I made the finals (for short story, not flash), I ran out of time for this and got dinged for it in the judging, which was completely fair.

I definitely need to do this. I have a small handful of friends who looked over the my second piece which scored much higher than my first. Just texted them to clear a few hours on Sunday afternoon!
