I think a new writer might get credibility by entering contests like this. There are a lot of short story contests out there.

I thought it might be worth my time while waiting for the contest results to randomly pick a prompt from this round and write another short. Just to get the juices flowing and practice for other contests.

I am not certain if using these prompts in another freestyle contest would be allowed. I would get clarification before I ever did such a thing.

So I am going to challenge myself to try a different prompt each weekend (one from each genre preferably). Saturday and Sunday to write a short, just for my brain.

Is anyone else interested in joining my mad endeavor?

I really like this idea, as there are a lot of new genres I've never tried and not comfortable with! Even if there's just a few of us doing it in a month's time, I'd be happy to Beta swap with people :)

Let's keep this motivation going!!

Sounds fun.

I was thinking something along the same lines, as a writing exercise.

Pick a number from 1 to 100, excluding the group you're in.  Commit to the number, and look up the prompts.

At the very least try to form a sketch and maybe a tagline.

I think I would really like to try this too! I really need the practice, but I also kinda need a bit of pressure (aka other people and/or a deadline), otherwise I just chicken out and end up not doing anything and just whine about how I can't write anything lol.

I really love this idea. It might cause my marriage to implode but I'm feeling reckless. Happy to co-admin a Google group or something if we need to go off site.

I'm not going to have the time to finish a full story in 48 hours this weekend, but I'm pretty committed to at least getting a start on some of the genres that scare me (fairy tale, fantasy, romcom). I would definitely appreciate some accountability partners, though!

Okay, here is the prompt for this weekend.
Group 58 prompt
Crime caper/a gun shop/a disco ball

Don’t blame me, my roommate picked the group by pulling a number from 1 to 100. You have until midnight Sunday to create the story.
Any suggestions on how to exchange the stories are welcome. I’ve check pen the box so I get an email for any posts in this topic.

GO!

Oooh, this should be fun! Not sure if I'll have enough time to work out something even half decent, but I'll give it a shot!

Alright, I'm in, I'm not sure if I'll have a full story by the end of the weekend (probably just a VERY rough draft) but I'll give it a go!

Thanks for organising!

That’s all we can do is try. A rough draft is a start.
Just remember what Ernest Hemingway said (which I have engraved on a pen and pencil set):
“The first draft of anything is s$%t”.
So go for it!
