Yeah, the points you see next to your name are strictly connected to your activity level on the forum. I don't know if anyone has ever figured out how they work.
 Too bad they aren't related to our story. I'd have almost 4,000 points! LOL!

They are - you get points for each interaction (posts, comments, if people have "thanked" you for something. It just indicates how active you are on here. You'll see descriptions too, like Newbie, Regular, Addict, and Black Belt. Again, just represents your level of activity on the forums.
