Hi all,
I just heard about and joined the competition this year without knowing much about it (It sounded like fun, and so far it has been!) I'm wondering if there are any restrictions on story content (i.e. should we be keeping it safe for the general public, no swearing and nudity, that kind of stuff?). This is probably something I should have found out before sending my story for the first round, but it didn't occur to me until I started reading other people's stories on the forums. So far, the few I've looked at have been quite "PG" language-wise, and I thought - oh oh! Was there something in the rules that I hadn't noticed? Anyway, I thought I'd ask on the forums before posting any other links to my story... Thanks! |

I don't know what the fu ck you're talking about ... 5hit, swearing? Not here, mate! Just in this round, I'll bet there are F bombs, C bombs, nudity, pedophilia, warm baby oil, murder, suicide, canibalism ... you name it! In my first entry, I garotted a bloke's head off with guitar strings ... top points. Had wild and steamy sex in a hair salon chair in the second ... top points ... no comments ... well, maybe a few on sex technique. Everyone's a critic ... The biggest controversies seem to be international spelling, grammar, punctuation and spelling out numbers under ten. As you can see, you can even get through the swearing filter on the forums ... There have been prudes who have commented on language and violence, but I think if it fits, swear it! There is nothing in the rules. You'll know soon enough if you've crossed the line, but I haven't seen it yet ... Edited by Scarlet Screenwriter - 01 Mar 2014 at 6:05pm |

General rule: no porn. But if the sex is important to the story, no problem.
And I only say no porn as a general rule because few people can write it and still write a good story in the space of 2500 words. Unless, of course, they are describing a quickie. ;-) One year for the Flash comp I wrote a story that included a gang rape which was watched by a voyeur with a telescope. I made it to the next round, so I would say creepy sex is not off limits. Last year in Flash someone wrote a lesbian awakening type of story. And swearing in the stories is common- perhaps this year there is less than usual or maybe you haven't read many stories yet. Anyway, unless the sex, language, and violence are gratuitous, I wouldn't sweat it. Besides, do you really want to win a comp that f**king censors you? |

It's the forum software ... you have to skirt it ... fu ck ... 5hit ... poop ... I agree ... no out and out porn ... knobgobbling and such ... my second short screenplay had a quicky in a chair and then sitting around nude in the "warm afterglow" ... people criticised the sex, not the story ... too brazen for an ex gf ... I also did a flash where all the smut was in the readers's mind ... it was quite an innocent wordplay between a married couple. |

Holy feces! I always wondered why the sons of female dogs in the forum were so genteel... censoring their naughty words with asterisks. I thought that was kind of strange since no one holds back in their stories. Now I know - it's the phallus-vacuuming, mother coitus-ing forum software that imposes that sense of propriety! Of course, as professional writers, we now how to get around these little barriers, so the forum software can osculate my posterior!
