Delighted to see several excellent stories from the forums make the top 10. Congratulations, everyone!
And to those of us who didn't rank - we all still did a damn fine job in making it to the finals all the same. Well done, all of you! |

I was so not expecting (but so very thrilled) to take third!
Congratulations to everyone who entered this contest! The talent is abundant and consistently astounding.

Huge congratulations to everyone who placed, and amazing job to everyone who entered!! Even though I didn't place I still got a kick out of recognising some of my favourite stories at the top.
![]() Excited to take what I've learned from this comp and tackle short story next weekend as a stronger writer than I was this time last year. Though after writing so much for flash and the micros I'm sure "short" story will feel like a marathon!

I am honored to have come in 8th place. Though I hoped to win (we all did, right?), I have only been a writer since 2018 and I know I still have a lot to learn. I know I have grown since my first piece of fiction EVER (for NYCM!) when my prompt was shrimp cocktail and my villain grabbed a bowl of shrimp cocktail to snack on while he confessed a murder. Congrats to all who placed and to all who entered. We are constantly learning and growing as writers.
Best, Alex

Crazy, fierce competition this round! So many amazing stories here, so much talent.
Making it to a final round (Top 75 out of 4100+!) is hard enough. Surviving the head-game that's a finals weekend, that's a whole other animal. And then there's the waiting, and the hoping, and the self-doubt. I know I was definitely not the only one with my heart in my throat all day yesterday. So cheers to all of you! Regardless of final placement, think about how far we've all come to get here. Not an easy feat. I've seen some real pro-market level stories on the forum in this final. Get those pieces out into the world. Of course, we all dreamed about winning... (no pun intended, well, maybe). But I'll leave you with this, from the great William Shakespeare: “Things won are done; joy's soul lies in the doing.” -W.S.It was an honor running this marathon with you. Hope to see you all in Short Story.

Congrats, Alex! I wish I'd read that shrimp story. haha. (sure it was great) Sad you didn't share your one this round! Very true on the writing development. My first story here I overwrote to triple length and then had to hack down. You can imagine how the went.
Congrats to ProbablySomeone your "Backhand" was really well done. Kudos!

Thanks for that, Lisa! (Congrats on your HM!) I had so much fun writing with you all! Just getting there was definitely a win. Now, just have to call my mother who is sure that I would win.

Really lovely quote, so true <3 And for those of us who didn't place, it's a little sad to not win, and we don't get an awesome illustration of our work done by that NYC artist person, but we still have four new story creations that we wouldn't have had otherwise! Short story time!

Didn't place and I'm pretty sad; was hoping for at least an HM. But I saw the caliber of the stories submitted, and all of the winning entries are more than well-earned. Really excited to tackle short story next week!
