What are your favorite short story writers? I am pretty familiar with the classics, but who are good contemporary writers that you like and why? Any genre is fine!

Thanks.

Charles de Lint (urban fantasy), Robert A Heinlein (sci fi), Stephen King/Richard Bachman (horror), Clive Barker (horror x 10), Francesca Lia Block (YA urban fantasy-ish), Vladimir Nabokov (drama), and Haruki Murakami (surrealism) all have amazing short story collections.

I bought this recently https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/0241347467/ Also Deborah Levy, Alice Munro, the Murakami collection Birthday Stories, Quiroga (in Spanish not sure if he's available in English but well worth it if he is) and I LOVE Damon Runyon (not contemporary but 20th century).

Oh, and Sherman Alexie! His modern Native American poetry and short stories are so good.

Contemporary?  What's that?

In some cases 'short' is a relative term

John Varley (SF)
Heinlein (Particularly the future history and juvenile - ie OLD works - pre Stranger in a Strange Land)
Gogol (learn Russian or get translations by Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky, ignore everything else)
O. Henry (William Sidney Porter)
Mark Twain (Samuel Clemens)
Dickens
Edward DeVere, the 17th Earl of Oxford (writing under the name Shakespeare)

George Saunders, Amber Sparks, Jennifer Egan, Karen Russell, Roxane Gay, Francesca Lia Block, Gunnhild Oyehaug, Denis Johnson, Ted Chiang, Amy Hempel, Carmen Maria Machado, Lauren Groff ...

Also very much recommend that, if you are looking to read short stories for both enjoyment and for craft, you pick up any of the Best Anthologies (Best American Writing, Best Science Fiction Writing, Best American Poetry, Best American Short Stories, etc) and the O Henry Prize Anthology. New collections in each of these categories are put out each year, and sometimes they can be hit or miss, depending on the guest editor (for example, no idea why, but I still have the 2007 Best American Poetry on my shelf, just something about nearly every poem in that collection speaks to me, and I still use it to teach since no collection since has had such a breadth of form & craft for me to share with my students).

Great list, thanks. Couple there I haven't come across, but I'm a big fan of Denis Johnson and George Saunders and quite fond of Jennifer Egan. Right now I am a bit obsessed with Lucia Berlin, and also like the strange, unsettling stories of Thomas McGuane. I've got his collection Gallatin Canyon in my bag for inspiration today, in fact.

Lorrie Moore, George Saunders, Junot Diaz, Carmen Maria Machado, Kristen Roupenian (but I have only read "Cat Person" in the New Yorker). NK Jemisin's new collection How Long Til Black Future Month? is excellent for sci fi/fantasy.

Wow, seeing how I haven't heard of any of these authors, except for Twain, O.Henry, Shakespeare, Dickens, Gogol, I have some serious reading to do. Smile Like the idea of the anthologies as well.

Thanks!
