So is this contest going to be affected by COVID-19?  The judges lives have been upended too, and I was wondering if everything is still expected to stay on track.

Yeah, they sent us a nice email saying they're on schedule for everything thus far! :-)

Shouldn't be. It's not like they have to go out to read stories on their computer or shouldn't have been done reading well before this. As long as the person who compiles the scores doesn't wind up in ICU, in which case we're up a creek but what can you do.

One should refrain from making assumptions about the potential chaos the pandemic has imposed on others' lives. Caring commitments, complexities in one's day jobs, and break downs in service delivery are just three things that could impact the ability for a judge to keep their commitments.

That being said, I'll take the email at its word that the timetable remains intact, but as hundreds of thousands of people across the world are tested positive, hundreds of thousands more remain untested but possibly infected, and large parts of society struggle to function, we shouldn't take anything for granted.

I think you underestimate how much Panera coffee impacts their ability to read our short stories ...

It's less than a week to results. If the judges weren't already long finished, it's a problem unrelated to the situation. If judges ARE putting it off to the last minute it explains some of the previous delays in contests.

The problem would be if Charlie (or whomever's responsible for the final compiling and notifications) had issues because he's the one busy now. At that point, there's absolutely nothing to be done except be patient and no point in worrying about it. If that happens, it'll get done when it's done and if it's late, oh well. No point in complaining at that stage.
