I think the organizer is mad unprofessional, and the design of feedback from competitors is inherently flawed. Especially without any system for TWs. No idea if this changed, and the organizer expected me as a competitor to provide solutions when I pointed out the problem. Not my contest, not my job.

I also had to read a super racist story that made frequent use of the slur "Chinaman" which the organizer decided to argue with me about whether or not it's a slur.

I am supportive of my friends who still enter and happy for those who succeed. I just think the contest organizer has a ton to learn about professionalism and responding to criticism.

I'm so incredibly sorry to hear that you experienced that. :(

I may do this, but want to know what I'm getting into.
Thanks!
Each story will have its own judging window. There is one box for "What this Judge Liked" and one for "What this Judge felt needed work." The amount of feedback depends on the judge. I've received as little as one or two sentences and as much as several paragraphs. You can comment on whatever you want: character, plot, dialogue, theme...it's up to you. Then you will be told to pick a winner. Thats it.

I personally leave well over one or two sentences. Usually two or three short paragraphs in the "liked" section and one or two in the "needs work" section.

Me - third time - but this may be my last go.
Not because of a bad experience or anything, but because I don't particularly like the single-elimination format. I can't really articulate why without it coming off as sour grapes (which it kinda is, I guess). But maybe it's just not for me.
I do enjoy the dueling part of it. I like being forced to read and provide feedback because I'm usually way too lazy to do it over here. Although I worry that I may be a bit too harsh on that front sometimes and tried really hard last battle to word stuff much more tactfully (something that's never been my strong suit).

As a judge, I leave a long, robust feedback paragraph. We are asked to comment on the strengths (which I think they call "what did you like?") and the weaknesses (refered to as "what needs work" or something like that). I make several points in each category and will pull out individual lines as examples. I probably write more than most people, but all judges are expected to offer decent feedback, something more than a generic line or two.

Usually I have a winner in mind after the first read, but I will sometimes think about it and then make a choice after reading them again (if needed). Then I sit dowm to write feedback. In the last iteration, we have 48 hours to leave feedback, which was perfect.

Many people love this part of the contest because you become invested in the stories that you read/judge and then it's fun to follow their progress. The forums are also wonderful and supportive.

If you are out in the first round, you will not know that until after all the judging is over. I progressed to the quarter finals one time and have been out early twice. I enjoyed all three times though, so my own progress didn't impact my experience.

The feedback I received was similar quaity to NYCM.

Thanks Jennk (and slinkylink, too!)! That's really helpful!

Writers Playground is another one I’ve done a few times. 10 days, one round, 3000 words with a list of character and setting prompts to choose from. In depth feedback on all entries. Judging is currently underway from the December contest, and if I had to guess I’d say the next one will be in April.

Globe Soup have several free competitions a year, along with a few more than have a fee, but it is pretty low.  It's UK based.  You don't get official judges feedback, but there is an active FaceBook page (Love Writing), which people often use to find people to beta with and provide feedback after submission.

Waiting till results of Rhyming Challenge Round 2 come out.

I'm already committed to an overnight social event this weekend and the concept that I might get through in the Rhyming and have to write two stories on top of that, including one in rhyme,  is too much.

If I don't make it through in the Rhyming but still get my act together by the deadline, I'll be in.

Sounds like fun. Thanks for posting about it. I'd like to keep writing, too. The short story challenge wiped me out mentally. I need more practice. I don't think I'd feel comfortable judging someone else's story, though. But maybe it would be a good way to start practicing critiquing, since it's anonymous.

I'm in. It's been fun and I found my feedback 95% helpful. A couple wingnuts in the past but I imagine they were booted from entering again. Excited to see the genres. There's always a couple regular ones and a couple that are out there and really get your brain going.
