My only experience was very bad lol

I think the organizer is mad unprofessional, and the design of feedback from competitors is inherently flawed. Especially without any system for TWs. No idea if this changed, and the organizer expected me as a competitor to provide solutions when I pointed out the problem. Not my contest, not my job.

I also had to read a super racist story that made frequent use of the slur "Chinaman" which the organizer decided to argue with me about whether or not it's a slur.

I am supportive of my friends who still enter and happy for those who succeed. I just think the contest organizer has a ton to learn about professionalism and responding to criticism.

Are any other NYCM members participating in this Writing Battle?

I love WB and this will be my fourth time entering. The community is helpful and supportive and I enjoy judging duels too. Their wacky genres are a lot of fun and they offer flexibility as you can switch genres and change out prompts.

I have always found Max, the creator and administrator of the contest, to be professional. Plus, he’s open to new ideas, and tweaks/improvements are rolled out with every iteration. Not every contest is going to work for everyone, but I believe most people have a very positive experience with WB. I encourage interested people to check it out for themselves. The next contest starts on Thursday.

@Taaaylor, I’m sorry you had a bad experience, and I hope you have moved beyond it. Take care.

That's unfortunate to hear. Hopefully, it's improved some but people that don't want to listen to feedback and argue too.Confused

I'm not going to enter but would be happy to beta for anyone who does.  My details are on the beta list for the short story challenge.

Can someone who's done WB before explain a little bit more about the duels? The rules say that you read two stories and give feedback to both, then choose the strongest. How is the feedback handled? Is it a sentence or two general comments of what we liked/disliked? A more detailed analysis (like what we do when we beta)?
I may do this, but want to know what I'm getting into.
Thanks!

I'm heavily debating, but trying to just ignore the Fomo of folks joining.

I feel like I've done quite poorly so far and the feedback I've gotten is actionable but has a sting to it. Its a huge commitment which makes it even harder when I don't even make it past round 1 so idk if its worth the money.

Maybe if the genres that drop are good enough to over come that. I think last time I joined after they had dropped cuz im good with being impulsive.

Ive never entered but this sounds so cool, I'm looking at considering it because I'd love to practice writing more. So theres NYC Midnight, Writing Battle, does anyone know of others throughout the year that can keep one active with writing?

Thanks!

As a judge, I leave a long, robust feedback paragraph. We are asked to comment on the strengths (which I think they call "what did you like?") and the weaknesses (refered to as "what needs work" or something like that). I make several points in each category and will pull out individual lines as examples. I probably write more than most people, but all judges are expected to offer decent feedback, something more than a generic line or two.

Usually I have a winner in mind after the first read, but I will sometimes think about it and then make a choice after reading them again (if needed). Then I sit dowm to write feedback. In the last iteration, we have 48 hours to leave feedback, which was perfect.

Many people love this part of the contest because you become invested in the stories that you read/judge and then it's fun to follow their progress. The forums are also wonderful and supportive.

If you are out in the first round, you will not know that until after all the judging is over. I progressed to the quarter finals one time and have been out early twice. I enjoyed all three times though, so my own progress didn't impact my experience.

The feedback I received was similar quality to NYCM.
