The criticism, if that's how the judge felt, sure could've been phrased in a nicer way. "I'd love to see you expand upon this creatively and show us something about Anne Frank's life (or the holocaust) that we've never thought of before. Don't be afraid to dig deeper with it!" or whatever. Instead, the judge sounded somewhat hostile and offputting, I daresay. Ermm

Aww, I'm sorry your dad didn't place. I hope he does more contests with us Smile

Yes, mine didn't place either. Disappointing but I know there are dozens and dozens of stories submitted in each heat. I do understand what the judge was getting at but definitely think it could've been said in a nicer way.

That judge, if (s)he even deserves the title, drove the author's points down for a personal opinion, not for valid critiques of the author's writing. I read the source story, and it's quite good. Had this judge been less subjective, would this author have scored high enough to move forward? Maybe, maybe not, but it's obvious to me this judge isn't doing a proper job, and I think that should be the central concern here.

My advice is for the author to forward the feedback to Charlie at NYCM and lodge a complaint and call for a complete audit of said judge's work to see if similar feedbacks have been sent to writers. Same with all the other judges who delivered "personal" comments, as opposed to profession and constructive criticisms.

Thanks so much for the support - You hit on the same point that I was upset about as well - The judge's boredom with my subject shouldn't have affected the scoring of my overall writing, in my opinion. I did give feedback in that form they sent us but I don't think I'll email Charlie because I just emailed him about the last competition I was in where I was apparently disqualified because they asked me to resend my story after the deadline and I did and I didn't know that disqualified me. So I emailed him back and fourth about that and I don't want to get a reputation for being a complainer haha. I'm in the flash fiction competition on July 10th, we'll see how that goes haha.

Thank you all so much for the kind words of support and empathy for this particular comment from the judge. I did alert them to this judge in my feedback form. On to the next competition Smile

I totally respect your choice not to email Charlie. But if you are not emailing him because you don’t want a reputation as a complainer, I would not let that be a concern. You have a valid criticism of this judge and a valid reason for your story to (potentially) be re-scored. You do not want this happening again to yourself or someone else.
Learn from my mistake: ALWAYS rate your NYCM judges
