The clock jangled in discord when the movers tipped it on its side. 


"Watch out." Mother ran to living room the instant she heard the noise. The house was gutted of possessions, except for the clock. 


One minute more, I thought. In one minute I would know if I could stay. 


"Mary, come here?" My mother called. I stomped into the barren living room of soiled beige carpet at her beckoning. 


"The police are here." 


And just like that I knew the minute was up. 


--Not exactly 100, but close. This helps take the edge of waiting off.
