Just finished reading a book about M. Night Shyamalan called THE MAN WHO HEARD VOICES and it got me to thinking about some of my favorite screenplays I read again and again when I need a little inspiration. Not necessarily favorite movies, but some of my favorite screenplays, for various reasons of course. Curious what the rest of you have enjoyed...

Some of mine:

Little Miss Sunshine
Shakespeare in Love
The Usual Suspects
Stranger Than Fiction
The Sixth Sense
Living Out Loud
American Beauty
As Good As It Gets
anything by Charlie Kaufman
anything by Scott Frank
anything by Richard Curtis
anything by Cameron Crowe

How about you??

I used Richard Price's scripts for Sea of Love, the Color of Money and night and the city in my screenwriting class. He's a flawless writer.

James L Brooks is also a master and if you haven't read the script to As Good As It Gets, you haven't crossed into a bigger world!

I love the script to Unforgiven (actually titled The William Munny Killings)

Love Die Hard

Love Robocop and read it once a year at least...it's the perfect action/sci fi reference (read it again for this year's heat)

Just read Shane's script to Kiss Kiss Bang Bang...awesome!

I'm sure there are many more...

kramer vs. kramer. i think it's a perfect script.

"Obsessive" isn't the right word, but it's the first word that comes to mind.

You guys have mentioned quite a few of my favorites already: Little Miss Sunshine, American Beauty, As Good As It Gets, Shakespeare in Love, Collateral, etc. I'll add:

Casablanca
The Green Mile
Double Indemnity
When Harry Met Sally
You Can Count On Me

As soon as I post this I'm sure I'll think of others I should add to this list...

The Others, damn near brilliant.

A Bronx Tale, I watch it every time it comes on (and try to read script at same time.)

Sideways.

Rocky.

Eve's Bayou, my all time fave.

Sixth Sense for lean writing that moves.

All,

"Memento" is a must read.  It masterfully separates black and white scenes from color scenes without any confusion.  If you haven't seen the movie you're missing out on a classic.  Nolan's best in my opinion.

Someone mentioned Shane Black's "Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang."  Also a must read if you want to see how to convey rip roaring action scenes with succinct, near perfect execution as well as crafty, witty, and downright hilarious dialogue.

Dawn, just make sure when you go to script-o-rama or simplyscripts.com (another site where you can find lots of scripts) that you're picking scripts and not transcripts. Transcripts are usually created by obsessed fans who write down all the dialogue but have no idea how to craft a screenplay.
