I got 3 points. I suppose it's not bad for my first ever writing competition and attempt at horror but I'm an extremely competitive individual so will be pulling all the stocks  out for round 2. suppose I also have the advantage of youth and time to grow if this doesn't turn out to be a good year :P

Group 48, 9 Points ... not bad.  I have to do that or better next round to go through ...

31 people in Group 48 ... 15 scores and 16 zeroes ... I guess I'm in 7th place ...

Lisa, I personally give your story a 15!

I'm not disappointed with a 4, partly because I betrayed my muse and wrote to the judges instead of writing what I like to write. I probably deserved a zero. Congrats to everyone, no matter the score!

I got a zero, but I am happy to be here with all my friends who also got a zero.

I gave it my best shot for a prompt I hated. Ultimately, what I turned in worked for me, and I'm good with that. I would rather risk a story I can say I struggled with than turn in something I didn't work hard on.

Sigh, Lisa. I don't get it. Your story was great. I'll be interested to see what your notes are. I got 1. I hated my prompts and wasn't thrilled with the story, that said, of course I'm disappointed. I'm excited to write again--hoping the prompts speak to me, but feeling like there's little hope of going further than the next round.

I did sign up for Short Screenplay and Fiction War, maybe I'll have more luck there.

First time doing anything like this or posting. 14 points. Thrilled.

So we do get feedback and not just our placement before the next round?

Also is there a general consensus on what point total usually moves onto the next round?

It's hard to say on who moves. You need to be in the top ranks, but sometimes people with a zero the first round advance because they get a good score in the second round.

Just keep your head down and do your best this weekend.

And congrats on your score!

Mathematically, you're not disqualified, no. It simply means an uphill battle. Give challenge 2 all you got.

First off, congrats on the 14 points! We usually get feedback before the next challenge (I believe - feel free to correct me, someone, if I'm mistaken).
As far as "consensus on point total," it can vary wildly. Last year, my grand total of 15 (0 and 15, respectively) wasn't enough to put me through. I ended up 6th, I believe, and the next highest score was only an 18, which isn't astronomically high. Depends on how many folks score high in both challenges, I suppose. If you got a 14 and, say, a 3, it could definitely pull you through. It's really hard to predict.

Thanks so much Lisa. I was lucky I got spy and not, say, political satire! I would really struggle with that and for what it's worth, I thought yours was great. Might just be a super strong group. So much of this is luck of the draw. Good luck in round 2!

Hell, I still have doubts about that. I was MISERABLE. I guess the "first time" factor accounts for something... I had no expectations in Screenplay since I'd never written one before. Prose, however, is right up my alley. I put so much pressure on myself this time around (and quit smoking three days ago).

I mean, disqualified for not using the object enough or not strictly adhering to the genre enough. I got suspense.. I went with more of a psychological suspense... that didn't quite turn out.

I came very close to not turning in anything, but realized I had an extra hour to work, which I did with a Nanowrimo-like reckless abandon. My story was a dang mess. At this point, I'm not as concerned with advancing as I am with just turning in something I feel better about.

A few advanced last year with zeroes in the first round. And several with 15s in the first round didn't make it. So anything is possible.

Thanks! I'd like to expand it (but still keep it a short story). Good luck to you, too, fellow Oregonian!

Lisa, I read your story and truly enjoyed it (I didn't comment because I didn't think I had anything to say that hadn't been said already) so I too am surprised it didn't score better.  But to be honest, political satire is such a freaking landmine, anything is possible.  I know you'll blow the second round out of the water.  I, on the other hand, will now receive political satire as a genre.  You should be able to hear my cursing all the way in NJ. :)

Thank you, I really appreciate it. Goal now is just to have fun with Round 2.

Sending positive vibes to you for a genre you like! (And it seems in your signature you placed first in your heat - congratulations! I'll stop by to read asap).

I'm feeling like a low score gives me the freedom to throw off any regard for round two judging. Now I can write whatever I want in the next round and post it for peer review. If I draw Horror or Drama or Romance, I'll just take the prompts and write Comedy. I was a little bummed about scoring low, but now I'm psyched! Thank you judges! You have set me free!!!!

Very surprised by a 9, but delighted.

What is surprising me more is some of the zero and low points on here. Proof that the judges do not know all.

Or that we don't know all? Sometimes I do think the peer reviewing gets an over inflated value. Seeing as the judges are the only ones who ever get to see ALL the submissions, they are the only ones who can give an informed albeit still subjective scoring.

A zero or low score doesn't mean the story was a bad one, it could be fantastic in every sense - however it simply means there were 15 even more excellent ones.

I am definitely in the "not knowing all" category also, but I do know what I liked to read. The judges scores cannot reflect that so they too are in the same category as I.

Peer review doesn't comment on the same aspects that judges do. We allow our fellow competitors more leeway on criteria and tend to comment on the content first then throw in some contest related critiques (in general, not always) and I've tended to find these the most constructive also.

What you like and how stories are scored are 2 entirely different beasts. But as I said, the judges are the only ones who see all. So all you can really say is it's a shame stories you personally like got low scores, but to suggest the judges got it wrong on scoring when you haven't read all the submissions a story you like is up against is a tad unfair on the judges, and, potentially, the higher scoring writers you've not read.

I agree Alexis. Some of the stories that got a 15 hit the use of prompts very well but were just not as well written as the lower scorers in some categories.

The judges are just people as well. They will pick favourite stories because it's impossible to be objective when judging creative writing. I've worked for literary journals as a selector and every judge has personal bias. You can judge grammar, use of prompts, logical progression etc but whether you like something plays a part.

Writing for a competition is strange. And the scores don't reflect 'good writing' as such, more what a judge on a given day liked the best.

No one should be discouraged with a zero. There are some brilliant stories here that scored nothing and some mediocre ones that scored well.

Good luck for round 2, everyone!

10.
Not sure how I feel about that. Objectively it's a pretty solid score. But now I feel like I have to bring it in round 2.

I was hoping to either score really high or really low. Take a little pressure off, knowing I have less than ideal conditions & limited time to write this weekend. I've got to stop double booking myself.

Ah well. As always, it'll be interesting to see what the judges have to say. Good luck this weekend everyone!

I'm excited to see all these high scores! Congratulations to everyone who did score, even if it was 1 point! My first fairy tale didn't score a thing. But that's okay. I usually don't expect points; that way I'm thrilled when a piece does score. If history repeats itself from last year, I'll get prompts this weekend that I'll struggle with, not like the story, and then it'll score a few points. I'm anxious to see the judges' feedback, though.

Good luck to everyone this weekend!

12.

Worlds of improvement from last year.

Out of curiosity... are the judges static from year to year, because they're NYCM affiliated, or is it a new batch every year?

I want to know if I actually got better, though. Knowing that the same judges gave me a better score this year would... at least feel like something approaching empirical proof of improvement. (As opposed to thinking I got lucky with a fresh batch of judges.)

NYCM is graded on a curve - your score isn't 'how well you did' but rather 'how well you did compared to the others in your group.'

The minute that you change groups, the scale has changed. :)  And no, judges are not static from year to year or from round to round.  The combination of "who I am competing against" and "who is assessing the competition' changes with every round/challenge.  So there is no basis of comparison from one to the other, as far as individual progress.
