It seems like quite a few of us participated in Fiction War over the weekend! It's a Flash Fiction contest associated with a literary magazine. The prompt for the summer contest was "seven years." No other guidelines, except for a word count range of 500-1000 words.

If you participated... feel free to post your title, genre, and word count below!

Here's mine:

Title: Spit or Swallow?
Genre: Dark comedy
Word count: 909

I put an entry in too!

Title:  Jane Jones and the Kool Aid Gang
Genre: Drama/Dark Comedy (Honestly not sure how to categorize it)
Wordcount:  978

I did this one too.

Seven Years Out
Sci-fi
990 words

Having to include the title in the word count seemed like a serious inconvenience with every word being so valuable in flash!

Title: Mothership Down
Genre: Drama?
Synopsis: Mother died seven years ago, but she's still here in spirit... to everyone's chagrin.

I did it too and had a much better time and result than my first round here.  Phew. It helped wash the tepid result from last week out of my mouth.

Title: Over the Lines
Genre: Drama
Word Count: 918

In for the second season in a row.

The Apprentice
Fantasy
974

Not thrilled, but short on sleep and time when I wrote. Hey, kind of like NYCM!

I participated too... thanks to someone else here mentioning it in a thread. Turned out to be a pretty stressful contest for me, due to distractions, false starts and a lack of good ideas. I ended up writing down to the wire and submitted less than 10 minutes from the deadline. But in the end, I'm happy with where I landed. I'm excited to tweak and expand the piece!

Title: Astronaut Application
Genre: sci-fi (well, sort of)
Word count: 992
# of story drafts discarded: 2
# of ants that crawled on my arm, weirdly inspiring me: 1

Yup, me too.  I like this comp because you get 72 hrs instead of 48.

Title:  "Cast Not"

Genre:  hmmm...Southern Gothic?  Naw.  Southern Drama.  Yeah...

Word Count:  996 (remember, your title counts in this comp)

Story drafts discarded?  Really?  Idk.  I mean, how many separate saves I had?  Probably 25.

Synopsis:  Haven't written one since FW doesn't want one but here's the first thing that comes to my head:  "The land's still mine if you haven't finished the time." (ha ha)

Yep, I almost didn't get one written, but I did it.

Title: A Father's Love
Genre: Military Scifi
Word Count: 956

Synopsis: A commander remembers his father as he watches the invincible advance across his lines. For seven years, he's had a plan, but can he execute it?

My beta readers seemed to respond well to it, even though it was (sorta) last minute. I felt good about it, in the end.

I did mine this year too. The freedom of there only being one prompt I found easier than NYCM.

Title: Regrets to Alice
Genre: Drama
Word count: 989
Synopsis: During a seemingly endless night, a man writes a letter to Alice.

It sounds so boring, but I think it's one of the better things I've written.

I did this too! Didn't realise so many others on here were participating.

Title: Luck and Order
Genre: Comedy/Fantasy
Word count: 984 (I think)
Synopsis: didn't do one, but I guess it would be: two magical law enforcement officers deal with the consequences of a broken mirror.

I found it quite hard having only one prompt, think I prefer the NYCM format!

I was in too :)
Title: The Shrine of Endurance
Genre: Comedic Fantasy
Word Count: 996

Logline: A wizard at the end of a seven-year quest finds his prize is not what he expected.

I had so much fun with this.  The extra day to write felt like four extra days, lol.

It sounds like 15 finalists will be announced on August 28th! And then the overall winner is announced a week or two later.

I've done FW before and they didn't update from "received" to "in progress" in those comps.  I believe NYC is the same way, but I'm not sure.  Everyone does it differently.  I find that I never know how it is going to be when I submit something.

So don't sweat it.  It is just how they do it.  It will probably remain the way it is now till they announce the finalists.  Yes, it is annoying, but that's how it is.

Hope I'm making sense.  I haven't had much sleep.  Sleepy

I'm hoping for 1:00EST, because that's when the prompt was released! But it doesn't really say...
