In case anyone wondered...

There are 2,522 writers in the competition.

There are 32 people in each group 1-42 and 31 people in each group 43-80.

Promptwise, there were:
6: Comedy, Horror
5: Action/Adventure, Drama, Fairy Tale, Fantasy, Ghost Story, Historical Fiction, Mystery, Romance, Romantic Comedy, SciFi, Suspense
4: Thriller
3: Crime Caper, Political Satire, Spy

That's all. No fun numbers until results come in. >.>

Here's a spreadsheet with the assignments broken down in easier-to-analyze ways. In case you are feeling bored and empty in the wake of the 48-hour panic ;):

well - there are 2500 stories, that each have to  be read multiple times... :)

most of us spend the interim reading other peoples' stories on the forums, so we an feed our inferiority complex... ;)

It's six weeks...ish. Sometimes they're delayed. The schedule should be in the terms and conditions, though I wouldn't consider that date set in stone; this is the largest FFC group yet, I believe.

well - there are 2500 stories

Which is about 2.5 million words, assuming everyone submitted.

Or about 5x War and Peace...

That's a lot of fiction created in 48 hours!

I'm assuming the vast majority do submit drafts. With the admission fee, it'd be kind of irrational not to at least TRY.

Mind you something has to be said about the sunk cost fallacy, too...

But yeah. I don't tend to worry about this and assume at least 95 % of registered people actually do submit something.

The ones I don't get are the ones who throw up their hands and quit when they don't score points on this first challenge, or even just a few points. "It's mathematically impossible for me to advance now, why should I bother?" Uhm, no, you absolutely can advance.

My first time with FFC I scored three points on C1, and then 12 on C2. 15 total was enough to advance me to R2. There are multiple documented cases where people advanced with 15 and zero, 14 and one, and IIRC someone in last year's FFC advanced with *14 and zero.*

I would like to know how many people fail to submit something, though.

At $125K for the one contest it seems like they should be able to handle all of us in a timely manner. Big smile

Scores Spreadsheet updated with this year's entrants.  Find it https://1drv.ms/f/s!Aja0YGKsAXDQhIItuBq-95lLpI7rVQ" rel="nofollow - here .

For those who are new here - this spreadsheet does NOT have genre assignments - it has scores and results, round by round, for the last two years, and an analysis we did last year exploring whether there was any correlation between those who posted to the forums and engaged in critiques, and contest results.

If that theoretically makes sense, you have to take into consideration consistency in judging... I'm assuming the same judges cover one whole group, for that very reason. You COULD split the groups in different teams of judges, but you'd be changing judging criteria within a group - and that is against all principles of fairness...

HOWEVER, I figure they could clone the same group of judges enough times that we'd have our full results the week after submitting... Oooooohhhh...

I would be surprised if the judges don't get some compensation. Then there's the cost of running the electronics behind the scenes - servers, web pages, and the like. And the admin/overhead. Maybe $500K/yr right now? It might not be as profitable as it looks.

judges do get paid. It's a pittance - we caught their Craigslist ad for judges a few years back - but they do indeed get paid by the story.

I am an NFL girl.  Baseball puts me to sleep - I just can't see the chess match the way I can with football or rugby.

And the ideal date has a ton of variables, depending on who, where, and when ;)  A walk in the woods with my dogs that is a treat in the summer is a torment in January. lol  Fortunately, I am married to the world's single most awesome guy, ever, so I don't have think too much on that sort of thing. Star

The problem is that they have at least three judges reading every story, so you've got to triple the number of words. And the judges aren't "full time" judges, they don't get paid enough for this to be a main job, it's more likely just a bit of extra money on the side, so they can't read 10 hours straight... then they also have to give feedback, and rank 30 stories in each group their reviewing... so... yeah. It takes a while. Wink

It really is isn't it - love it! Data shows up the quirky anomalies - like Heat 12 of last year's second round was clearly VERY high calibre as 4 out of the top 10 in the final (including the winner and runner up) came from that one heat.
