How much is that gonna hurt? I see a lot of people doing genre-crossover stories (mostly comedy + ____), but are fairy and fantasy tooclose?

On a brighter note, I've got three little pigs in there smoking Marlboros. That's gotta count for something.

Best of luck, all!

As someone whose wheelhouse includes Fairy Tale and Fantasy, I'm of the opinion that some hazy boundaries there aren't going to hurt you at all.

A bit late, but check out Vladimir Propp's "Fairy Tale Transformations." He provides a list of events that make up every single fairy tale and seven Dramatis Personae, basic character types in a fairy tale. It's one of my favorite literary theory pieces.

My Fantasy leans a little bit toward Fairytale... I think these things just happen... Especially with only 1000 words to play with. Tongue

I think my suspense has one foot in horror as well. Hopefully won't be given the sine die over it!

My everything tends to lean toward horror.

My fairy tale (a couple years ago) was very fantasyesque and did well. Same for my fantasy that was similar to a fairy tale.

There's plenty of leeway, usually. Though it does always depend on judges.

My 'suspense' is pretty much a horror. Hopefully they'll take a loose approach to the definitions... I found 'suspense' so hard to work out. The definition is virtually the same as Thriller and they give 'Silence of the Lambs' as an example!

Yeah... but they'll complain regardless, so might as well enjoy your own story, I say. Smile

That I'm looking forward to reading... does that make them smoked pork? LOL

I ended up writing a space drama. Long live the mash up.

Can't believe you didn't get a ghost story! Haha.

I wrote a space drama last year and did quite well with it, so I'm a fan of that plan (natch). Looking forward to reading yours and many others!

All fairy tales are fantasy while not all fantasy is a fairy tale.  I researched this point while writing my story which is supposed to be in the fantasy genre but leans a bit more toward a fairy tale.  BAH  I care not.

It is my experience that if they like your story you can get away with just about anything, and if they don't like your story they will ding you to death.  But seriously, I doubt you will be dinged for this.

This is the major writing revelation I had this Flash Fiction - everything I do turns to horror - and I need to try work with that more.

The only thing that saved my fantasy piece (from this at least) was that the word count made me cut out the giant mine monster ;)

My horror has one foot in suspense, sometimes both.

I'm getting strong "The Player" vibes from you today.

It's like Pretty Woman meets Predator, but with cats.

This is my first time with NYC Midnight and I am so relieved to read your comment, my Suspense story definitely has a whopping amount of the Thriller/Horror genre in there!
It's definitely a suspenseful story, but I'm concerned re what exactly entails the Suspense genre... based on the website's genre definitions I'm hoping I'm ok ConfusedWink

Fingers crossed for us both!

I'm curious about the childhood you people had.  Just wondering..... it might make a great flash piece - writer with an unusual childhood can't stop writing horror stories.

And my horror leans toward dark comedy, not sure it's horrible enough.

But I know all about that judge you mentioned.  I had him/her  or should I say, "IT," for SSC.  Talk about horror! We had differing opinions about what constitutes Political Satire.

Sigh.

But onward!!!
