How's everyone feeling about their R2 prompts?

I ended up in Heat 4: Mystery - Setting a trap - A tutor...

Not bad. I might already have a little something cooking.

From the looks of it, some folks from R1H20 ended up in my heat again! Let's match words and imagery once more, then!

Good luck to everyone!

Ohh Zblugg, I'm envious!

I'm in heat 7: Historical fiction - fear of heights - dictator.  Historical fiction in 72 hours: NAY!

Good thing is that I mistakenly thought we only had 48 hours in this round but really relieved we have 72.  This ain't called a "challenge" for nothin' so putting my thinking cap on.  Good luck to all!!

Juli, I was actually dreading the prospect of Historical Fiction being my genre, so I fully sympathize. 72 hours is right, though I can't tell if that'll be enough...

But as you said, it's MEANT to be a challenge!

Hang in there!

I really wanted horror (can we swap groups TimG? 😉) but got drama.

Drama - searching for a biological parent - a professional athlete.

Not loving it on first glance, drama feels a bit of a nothing genre to me. But I think I would find historical fiction more daunting I've got to say! (Sorry).

Now I just need to carve out some time over the weekend. Hopefully my Father's Day present this year will be time to write... 😬

Good luck everyone!

Sci Fi here. One of my favorite genres to read and watch but I've actually never written in this genre!

A wise friend just reminded me that FICTION is at the heart of Sci-Fi. A mantra I will carry throughout the weekend.

Good luck, everyone!

I'm loving my prompts -- Suspense, home security, a youth sports coach. Already have my outline done and starting the first draft script in about an hour.

I noticed my good friend Scarlet Screenwriter got Historical Fiction, something he's really great at, so this round ought to be all sewn up for him!

Best of luck to everyone in Round 2. :)

Same here, Suspense, home security, a youth sports coach.

How baked in does the profession need to be? My retired army general story was all based around her being a retired army general. But if I just had someone arrive home with a sports bag and go "phew, tough day coaching those youths", and then that was the last we heard of their sporting would that be frowned upon?

Just finding it hard to make their job integral to what I wanna write.

I think the main thing is just making it have an influence on the story to some degree. For my first round screenplay, I had "a mayoral election" as the subject and just had my main character be the son of the mayor, the election being a background event that made his parents too busy for him. It was never the centrepiece of the story, and I barely discussed it, but it definitely had an important place as well. So yeah, having a brief mention of his profession like that probably wouldn't be enough unfortunately, but you don't have to make the whole thing revolve around it either.

I know, right? I feel like any other heat's prompts would have been easier for me. What I'm aiming for is centering my story on the emotions of the main character to keep dialogue at a minimum so that trying to get the dialect or political details correct of the historical era doesn't slow me down too much. Too soon to say at this point. Good luck to you!!

Hey there, I agree with ADecker92's response to your question that unfortunately, I do think the judges need the character (including his or her profession) to influence your story or be important to the story. But as the email they send with guidelines says, it doesn't have to be the main character. In a previous short story challenge (not screenplay) where I placed first in my heat, I got a prompt for "gardener" and I included a supporting character in the story that was a monk who enjoyed gardening. He made a brief appearance in one scene, and then he sent my main character a letter about his garden. It was a relatively minor detail, but one that revealed my main character's effect on people as well as a goal she was trying to accomplish. Not sure if that helped at all. Good luck!

I do think that's helpful--since you weren't disqualified, we know now your approach is approved! :)

More broadly, when it comes to the prompts and our reactions to them, I think we all have a secret or not-so-secret hierarchy of dread when it comes to genre... oddly enough, "open" scares me more than anything. I kind of like working with a little constraint.

I concur.

In R1H20, we had to include a restaurant critic. Though my critic was not the main character, I made it to R2. My two main guys were restaurant owners. The critic was a somewhat passive antagonist.

Historical fiction is my favourite genre ... along with fantasy, political satire ... well, I guess all of them ... worked it out in the first few minutes ... wrote the title and log line first, as always ...  now just to let it simmer ...

I have to admit, this prompt tripped me up a bit at first. I think I just researched all of Russian history in the last 48 hours. LOL! I've managed to get a draft to the "I no longer hate this" stage, and with a whole night to sleep on it! YAY!!

R2 G3 Comedy / A night in jail / A computer repairman

Ugh. This was hard, and while I am "done" in the sense of "just doing the final edits," I really didn't do as good as I'd want to. I could not make the "funny" come out.

Well, we'll see what the judges think.

Agreed. I think Comedy might be the hardest genre. While I feel like I'm writing stuff a good comedic actor could run with, there's no guarantee the judges will visualize the same performances I do.

Yeah, if there is a genre that scares me it's comedy--subjective, ephemeral, elusive. I can do funny moments, but keeping them going, building them up, not getting stale... and as MaHaBone notes, a good comic actor can make potentially funny things hilarious.

Perhaps the key to comedy in a contest like this (or any contest) is to somehow invoke a particular performer's style of delivery (without naming him or her, obviously)? To get the picture right in the reader's mind? I don't know, but it's got me thinking.

I had to settle for droll with some interesting characters.

/shrugs

I am satisfied I got this far, and I think, given that this is my second screenplay ever, that I did a good job.

To all those who will advance to the next round, my hat is off to you. In fact, my hat is off somewhere and I can't find it, so if you see it, let me know.

I'm actually very happy about my R2 screenplay, so far. And that scares me. If experience has taught me anything, it's that I should NOT like what I write so much. Whenever I've been confident about something I wrote, I got bad feedback from outside sources in the end.

The feedback I've had from a few readers, so far, has been good, mind you. But the judges are where it counts, isn't it?

Stephen, I'm with you on the "second screenplay ever" situation. I'd be lying if I said I thought my R1 would allow me to go through...

The butterflies are acting up again. Dang.

Hi there!

Congrats on riding through and making to the fun part!  I briefly considered Russia as well but went with Eastern Europe (Hungary/present day Romania) in the middle ages instead.

I've gotten historical fiction before (during the flash fiction challenge) and although I griped about it then and complained about again it this time, ultimately I'm finding that it's more or less the same amount of work. It's always difficult for me to make my protagonist's emotional journey feel organic in such a short time and stripping down my always overly complicated plots. That's what I'll be wrestling with for the next 8 hours.  If I nail it, I'll be proud. If not, it'll be a half-baked mess. Ha!

Good luck to you, I look forward to reading yours (and everyone's!).

I haven't pulled comedy yet in any of these challenges (though I've written, what, 4 crime capers? LOL) Anyway... I'm somewhat terrified of the comedy prompt, because feel like it would be very much akin to someone holding a gun to my head and saying, 'BE FUNNY!'

All that aside, there were some laughs in there, Stephen... I think you did better than you thought you did. Can't wait to read the final draft!

I totally hear you... I think 80% of my revisions were going in and making it less "history book" and more "personal experience" from my main character's POV. I'd re-read a line and be like, "Great, now we know THAT happened... but how did she FEEL about it?"

I turned mine in a couple hours ago... now the painful wait begins!

Yeah I have been so concerned because everything I read about H.F. is that the most important aspect is research and damn time spent perfecting the time period and language and all that! I definitely made it more of a character study, I don't really watch H.F., lets hope the idea is unique enough!! Good luck to you as well!!

Trade ya!
I personally prefer offbeat humor, comedy is so broad, the darker the better I say!

I got a ghost story/sewer system/a troubled teen, which I LOVE. Was super happy it was a genre that I'd enjoy because this contest literally could not have come on a worse weekend for me (I, of course, checked the dates AFTER I signed up Thumbs Up). Traveled abroad for a jam-packed family filled family wedding weekend, so I've had to sneak off and write any chance I could, but THANKFULLY I was able to finish. I was super-psyched to have made it to the second round - certainly had no idea what to expect with this competition. Congrats to everyone for getting this far & good luck when the judgement comes...Stern Smile

Well, I got Group 7, Historical Fiction/Dictator/Fear of Heights ... Historical fiction is my favourite genre ... along with fantasy, political satire ... well, I guess all of them ... worked it out in the first few minutes ... wrote the title and log line first, as always ...  now just to let it simmer ...
HA! You can just resubmit your R1 screenplay verbatim!

Why on earth would I do that?  R1 was indeed a bit Political Satire on top of Fantasy, but certainly not Historical Fiction!

Last laugh ... I have indeed included Donald Trump in my R2 screenplay ... upon doing my research, I found he was involved in the historical episode I chose!  Couldn't resist!

I am right there with that historical fiction woe! I just keep telling myself that I am doing this for the challenge, and this is basically the biggest challenge yet!

Of course my final draft ended up being VERY heavy on dialogue. I couldn't figure out a way around it to explain what was going on. I imagine a lot of it was inconsistent,  but I did my best. I hope the story was strong enough, but I'm really just glad I finished it and submitted. The world I put myself in over these past 3 days was way too dark and I need a break!

I look forward to reading everyone's scripts. But now... SLEEP! Good luck to all! Clap
