R1/Gr27 - Action-Adventure/Animal Poaching/A Hotel Manager

The Sylvan Springs Lodge

Called to a secret wildlife preserve, Agent Moore learns that there is much more to the world than he realizes.

This has got to be the worst log line I have ever written.  No excuses, but everything that could have gone wrong with the exception of my computer catching fire or me turning into a koala did.  Finished the script with two minutes to go; got it submitted with seconds left.

Now it's time to go have a slice of cake, find the giant spider that crawled over my fingers and disappeared behind the desk earlier, feed the cats, and go to sleep.  WHEW!  Sleepy

This was my first attempt at writing a screenplay. I knew the only way I'd actually buckle down and try it was by entering a contest. I'm thankful for my beta readers, and for Scrivener! LOL Mostly for my betas though, because they were awesome helpers.

Anyway... amazingly enough, I got neither Crime Caper nor Horror (which seem to be the only two genres NYCM likes to give me). This time, I was assigned Political Satire. The idea for the story hit me immediately. Unfortunately, I didn't have time to put fingers to keyboard until Thursday night! (It was a week of kid stuff... ice skating competition, band concerts, junior high prom, hockey tournament...) Still got it done in time! Yay me! I'll chalk that up to successful adulting ;)  And without further blah blah... here's my title and logline:

10: Political Satire/A fundraising event/A furniture mover

Two Percent

When it comes to charity, the wealthy elite are ready and willing to give. But who is on the receiving end?

Hello everyone!

Well, I have discovered that I hate writing about Horses and racing and most of all jockeys.

I dragged and pulled and extracted every last word.

It is definitely a drama, as my life has been for the last 24 hours. Not least of all because NYC. don't accept final draft doc's and for some reason they also rejected my word doc, which had to be copied, pasted and re-tabbed in word when it blew out of final draft, (inhales deeply). Then eventually with 13 (obviously) minutes to go my dramatic script loaded as a pdf. Now just filled with trepidation to see if the whole process was worth it and if the drama lives up to the script!

Anyway, rant over; I got: group 31 - Drama / A Horse Jockey / learning to read and write

                                'The Final Hurdle'

Fred Bannon 's horrific fall leaves him isolated in a silent world. A silence chosen by another boy to forget the horrors of war.'

First of all, AWESOME logline! Can't wait for a chance to read it. (If you were to share it with us, of course.)

But I feel your pain!

I have a reflexive dislike of PDF files because when they are shared in Google Drive they have this wonky interface that puts black bars at the top and bottom with NOT HELPFUL RIGHT NOW navigation controls, and try as I might I can't dismiss them. I actually downloaded an app that converts them to a readable document format.

I dinked around with a few programs, all which can import/export Final Draft content, and ended up with a mix of Fade In and Writer Duet. (Fade In for writing, and Writer Duet for final PDF because my copy of Fade In is still the demo version.) When I purchase Fade In, I think I'll use just that.

Best of luck with the judges! And remember, life is what happens when you're still planning for life.

R1|GR19 - Fantasy | Faking an Injury | A Sailor

Redamntion
Love between an angel and a succubus can last centuries, if they don't destroy each other.

***

Okay, so I had this nice start on a sweet story about an orc sailor who fakes an injury to get out of joining the war so he can see more of his son.  However, I ended with an erotic-ish fantasy where a succubus fondles an archangel.

I'm thinking those pictures in the Dungeons & Dragons manuals of my youth are still kicking around in my id somewhere equating fantasy to hot monster.  Let me know if I'm beyond psychological and/or literary redress.

Cheers & Good Luck All!

Soldiered on with my most dreaded genre- Political Satire/ A fundraiser/ a furniture mover. Fairly certain what I submitted was absolutely wretched, but I'm glad I finished. Not quitting is my big achievement here. Plus, I ran out of cares to give and used of my favorite absurd words in my title.

The Snollygosters' Ball

A small town jack of all trades is a fish out of water at a fancy D.C. fundraiser, but he may be more welcome than he imagines.

My script came out OK, but no lightning in a bottle. I found it hard to decide what flavor of horror to chase- did you?

I actually wrote 2. One was a more Silence of the Lambs style - which my wife did not get all. And thus taught a bit about why Silence of the Lambs worked and mine didn't.
The second script felt very X-Files to my wife, so that's the one I went with. Hopefully Horror-y enough.

Hi MaHaBone, It was my first horror. I can't watch horror, as I'm a complete wimp when it comes to anything supernatural (I'm okay with violence though- Game of Thrones I could eat for breakfast!). But writing it wasn't nearly as scary. I'm sure there's a lot in the direction of a horror piece to do with music that creates the creep factor. At least I hope that's why my own didn't scare me! Good luck. cheers

Kitty ... how can you say that?!?  Every set of prompts is the best set!  Some are more challenging than others, but all lead to a hidden treasure!  I am envious of some other prompts sometimes, and know exactly how I would do them, but I loved #12 ...

I think I've been here so long, I've had every single genre ... I love historical fiction, political satire, romantic comedy ... Fantasy, Fairy tale are special.

Good luck!  I think you're the 5th #12 ... some pretty interesting ...

AH truth be told, it was OK, and I ended up happy with the thing. I ended up writing two completely different stories, and I LOVED the first one, but for sentimental reasons.

And I was proud to have finished with something that I'm not embarrassed about. Smile

Thanks guys! I would love to read yours as well, looking forward to sharing and reading other people's work (I was about to say particularly those in the same category Zblugg, but I think I will also feel most trepidation when reading those! :)).

We're definitely fine to share titles and loglines at this stage right? (sorry for newbie paranoia...)

Hahaha! I had the same fear! But seeing as a lot of "veterans" are doing it, let's join the bandwagon, why don't we? ;)

Also, I sincerely hope that all 20th heaters use the duck as their avatar. Coincidence or synchronicity? Who knows...

I actually got lucky with this.  I'm not a fan of my finished product, to be honest, as drama is not my thing. . . however, I had literally just read an article about my subject the week before the prompts were released.  I took it as a sign and ran with it, haha.

Thanks Stephen,

I'll definitely check these out.

Thrilled you like the logline!

Looking forward to reading yours too!

Really interested to see how you guys handled this, it was a bit of an offbeat prompt and took some work for me to come up with something. My first draft was 18 pages too, and it was absolute torture trying to cut it down to size. :(
