The 20th is almost officially over and I still haven't see any announcements for round 2. I know they have a habit of running late but that doesn't make it any easier. Is anyone else compulsively checking the site every hour or two? I can handle rejection. I can't handle waiting.

Err... It's only just now the 20th, unless they're running it from Japan or something. Perhaps you should shake your calendar a bit to make sure it's still working? Tongue

My experience this last year is that when they're on time they're on time - results go out just before midnight. When they're going to be late, they let us know sometime that evening. With 3000+ stories this time around, I'm not holding my breath...

I read in my confirmation email when they received my first round that they would announce it at 11:59 tonight.  I'm telling myself that I won't stay up for it but I'm fairly certain I will!!!

You know that kid at school who tells you they're going to run the whole track, but you know deep down they're only going to get half way? You want them to do it, you really do, and you have every hope that this will be the time they succeed.

But, you can't help but think about last year, when they tripped on their laces in the last fifty metres, or the year before where their training only consisted of eating chocolate bars and watching Usain Bolt videos on Youtube?

Whatever happens to that kid in the race, you still cheer when they eventually make it over the line, don't you?

That's how I like to think of NYC's deadlines. They've got big aims and we all hope they fulfil them. But, deep down, we know they probably wont. That's okay though, because they'll get there in the end and we'll be very happy when they do.

Good Luck everyone!

With such a collection of writers and only so many spots, there's no way it was easy for them to decide who goes on and who doesn't.

Hoping for the best, for myself and for everyone else!

If nothing else, at least you took part. You can't win if you don't play.

I decided to make cookies while I wait. With my daughter, so it takes twice as long as necessary. So far, so good.

This has the added bonus that, even if I get disappointing news in the end, at least I have snickerdoodles.

A dojo is what they call the karate school. My son's in his class, practicing to get his black belt, and valiantly trying to pretend I'm not here bouncing on the bench. We've been coming here long enough that everyone knows us so he can't even pretend I'm not related. Poor kid.

To help us pass the time, here is the shortest flash fiction story I have written.

Just a Little Rock-30 Words

The couple talked on the pier until sunset. He opened a small box followed by a kerplunk.

“What was that?”

“Just a little rock,” he said as he dove in.

Didn't make the list at all, which sucks, but I might actually get some work done over spring break.

Congrats to those who did make it through, and congrats on your HM Lisa!

I wish there weren't so many stories not posted. Looking through the list, there are stories missing that I just can't believe didn't go through!

I got through but I feel a bit guilty because I've been a sh*tty reviewer despite some folks giving me feedback. It's my first time and I felt overwhelmed. But my goal is not just to write a good 2nd rounder, but be a better contributor here. Best of luck, all.

Self-fulfilling prophecy.  "The Art of Rejection."  My self-help guru is dancing with glee.  Maybe he'll give me a job writing short stories.  Ha.

Honorable mention.  Nice to be recognized but not enough to keep going.  I'm super disappointed.

Congratulations to everyone who is advancing.  I saw some well-deserved winners on that list.

Third in my heat! I may need to change my weekend plans a bit to suit this news...

Congrats and good luck to everyone who got in and condolences to those who missed out, skimming the lists it looks like a bunch I read on the forums and enjoyed weren't listed - it's all subjective!

Like Dogmafrog I feel a bit bad that I faded early on providing feedback on the forums - going to try really hard to rectify that this round.

4th place isn't terribly exciting,  but I do enjoy writing these stories, once the agony of pulling an idea out of the prompts yields to an idea. Glad I get to play another round.

Well, boo, I'm out too. But I read a lot of the stories on the list, and one of my personal favourites GoodFences.com got through - first in its heat. So congratulations to the winners, thumbs up to the honourable mentions and hugs for those not mentioned.

I find myself feeling pretty much nothing, so I suppose my natural pessimism helps in these situations.

I placed 2nd in my heat. I feel mixed emotions. I'm glad I made it through, but I'm sad, and somewhat confused that some of you on this thread didn't. Some of the stories I read that didn't make it were ones that I loved.

Congrats or condolences depending on where you landed.

I look forward to reading stories from many of you in the future, either the next round or the next contest.

Did any of the other HM's go through the list and see their name and have a moment where they think I made it, only to notice a second later that it says HM rather than a number.

To be so close but not make it is hard, but instead I will be positive since this was my first attempt it is good to get on the list at least with 32 or so people in the heat. Although they did spell my name wrong. LOL. I don't mind because I know they were probably rushing to try and make sure they got the results to all of us faster. I think it's kind of funny but I have an odd sense of humor.

This was an awesome experience that taught me a lot and really pushed me to craft a story in a genre I would NEVER have chosen on my own. I think it was the jump start I needed to get back into writing after losing someone close to me and I feel blessed that I stumbled on to this contest on accident the final day of signups.

Good luck to everyone moving on. As for the rest of us. You fail at 100% of the things you don't try. So lets keep trying.

It was my first time too! And of all the possible genres, I literally got the single one I was hoping not to get (Political Satire) so, to get an HM doesn't feel too too bad. Of course, I'd rather be moving onto Round 2.

Yup.  Saw my name and had a moment of pure elation... only to see those dreaded two letters next to it.  Then, the moment of pure deflation.  So close.

Writers like us invest a lot of time in writing. I'm sure that is true of you or you would not be having these thoughts. I do think it is good for us to realistically evaluate our talent. I would suggest, if you haven't already, that you submit stories to other competitions that don't have a time limit and that don't provide prompts. Work on that story until it shines. Submit it and see what happens.

I have been part of this challenge and the forum for four years. I haven't missed a flash fiction or short story challenge since I started. I can honestly tell you this. It hurts for a short period after I get passed over again. But the difference in my writing between when I came here and now is something I am excited about. My worst stories have been written in these challenges. Don't ask me why, but it's true. Outside the NYC Challenges, I have written some pretty good stories, but that would not have happened if I had not actively taken part in the forum.

It's each person's choice to return or not. Choosing the right motive for being here helps. I don't come here to win. I come here to grow.

You are a good writer. Don't question that. But good writers are a dime a dozen, really. The great thing about being a good writer is that you can get better. I heard Stephen King say that once. He said that bad writers can't get better, but good writers can become great writers.

But not every good writer will become great. Only those who keep on working at this craft will become great. I'm not saying I will. I was a late starter, so the clock is ticking on me. But I think I have some good stories to write, better than what I've done up to this point. And so do you. So get ready for the Flash Fiction Challenge. I'll see you there.

Thank you so much for your reply. And thank you for the reminder of why I came here. I didn't come here to win, I came here to even see if I could do it. It would have been really nice to make it to round 2, just to know I had that, but even completing this is a huge feet for me. I had brain surgery almost 4 years ago, and couldn't write for a really long time. Before that, I had taught writing, and self-published. At this point, doing my first competition, I think I need to just congratulate myself on actually having even finished. I'll practice a lot, now that I know that I can do it, and I'll do better in the next one. Thanks for telling me about your own growth in this process. It's really helpful to hear it.

Honorable mention.  Nice to be recognized but not enough to keep going.  I'm super disappointed.

Congratulations to everyone who is advancing.  I saw some well-deserved winners on that list.

YOU WUZ ROBBED!

It felt very "Confederacy of Dunces"-like. I loved the story and the craziness of it all.
