So, now that the first round is over, what happens now? I get that we wait for the results, but does anybody have a timescale on those? Also, how many from each heat go through to round 2?

From the main page (http://www.nycmidnight.com/Competitions/SSC/Challenge.htm):

"The judges choose a top 5 in each heat to advance to the 2nd Round (March 23-26, 2017)..."

In my experience, sometimes you won't find out if you made it until only a few days before (so, ~March 20). Gets frustrating when you were holding off on that weekend's plans! :)

Literally 'dying' to know if I get to write again for this contest.

The first round was incredible. I loved the challenge of writing this way; time restriction, specific genre/subject/character. I think it actually kept me more focused! :)

My story was titled : Own It Your Way

It was a full eight weeks this time. Isn't that a week or two longer than it has been? I'm hoping it means the results and feedback will be on time this year. I've never fallen out of the forums for so long before. I'll spend quite a bit of time here tomorrow and Monday. Try to get my head back into the whole thing. What was my story about, again? I forgot. LOL

Does anyone know if they post the finalists to the first round, i.e. the stories themselves so that we can read them? Would be fun to read the winners in each category

A lot of the top stories (according to the official judges) won't be available because the authors will be attempting to use them in other, possibly profitable, ways. You can check the results on Monday night or Tuesday and then follow the links to see if they are still good. But NYCM won't be publishing winning stories from round one.

But you do bring up a good point. It is a very helpful exercise to read the stories that the judges felt were the best.  We can't and probably don't want to simply mimic those styles, but it might give us some ideas for the next challenge.

The email we got said we should hear at midnight tonight.  They are sometimes late, though, but then we should get an email saying when they expect to have the results up.

You will get an email saying that the results are up and it will have a link to the websites where the results will be posted.  The results themselves do not get emailed to you.

Hope this helps!

I don't get to watch anything live (Saturday Night 'Live', Dancing With The Stars  -  pretty much when they do a 'live' version of any show it's only truly live on east coast time), but for once I'm grateful for being on the west coast. Although to be honest I probably won't be going to sleep any earlier since I'll either be eating ice cream and feeling sorry for myself or obsessing about the next round. Good luck everybody. Beer

I fully expect to be exhausted tomorrow (will be up at midnight EDT) and either a) incredibly grouchy and bummed that I didn't make it or b) too keyed up to go to sleep or to focus on my day job due to a positive outcome.

I am going into tonight with zero expectations.  When I was brave enough to get my hopes up in Flash I crashed and burned big time.  So I'm neutral.  Anxious, but neutral.

I'll be pressing the refresh button a hundred times tonight with everyone else, hopeful that I did not jinx myself by entitling my story The Art of Rejection.

Best of luck to you!

So we've got our results. Congratulations to everyone who got through, it was a tough a contest. Now my question is, who gets feedback? Just the top 5? Top 5 + Honourable Mentions? Everyone?

Anyone know how they do this?

EDIT: found an old email from the organisers, we all get feedback.

Cheers

The feedback can be sketchy sometimes. Feedback here in the forum is much more helpful in my opinion.

Ah, thanks for the heads-up. That's a shame, I was looking forward to the "professional" feedback. Mostly about why I was an HM but not a top 5 and what I could do about it in future. I have enjoyed the forum feedback though, so that's a plus.

Same, except my feedback in the forums indicated I seemed to have missed the mark a bit with my story + genre, etc. but I ended up getting an honorable mention as well. So, if anything, I'm hoping for judge feedback that explains what the judges liked about my piece so I can compare it with the more critical bits of feedback I got on the forum and see if I can make more sense of everyone's opinions on the whole. But I guess we'll see soon enough. Tongue

Congrats on your HM, by the way!

Some folks do post their feedback as well - which can help you in sussing some of that out. :)

Congrats on your HM, by the way!

When our peers are critiquing, they may be wringing our stories out looking for one little tidbit to use as a negative point. They aren't trying to be mean, just balanced. Nobody wants a review that is simply a slap on the back and being told they just wrote the next War and Peace.  So here in the forums, we may go overboard a little in search of a valid negative point.  The judges, on the other hand, tend to be quite forgiving on the subject of genre. We are even told in the instructions from the outset to be creative in interpreting the genre.  But this can really be a time for us to view our work objectively, and it sounds like that is what you are wanting to do. These contrary opinions force us to honestly evaluate which one is true. For me, that is a valuable part of these challenges and forums. I gain a deeper understanding of my writing and of myself as a writer.

I'm one of the weirdos who finds the"professional" feedback helpful. It could be I've had a run of good luck the last couple of years, but the technical tips I've gotten have made a difference in how far I've gotten in subsequent competitions. Also, got published this year. So, yeah, helpful.

In general, I find our peers to be more story-specific in feedback (and that goes for me too!). The judges get into writing as a whole, in my experience. Again, I could be lucky.

Congratulations on being published. Fantastic. I think you are correct about our peers and ourselves as peers, are story specific. Good point.

Last year I had a judge whose reading level was probably around 6th grade. Sorry to sound bitter, but I've never received such support and apologies from THIS community over such ghastly feedback (just from one judge - the other two loved my piece). It's luck of the draw. That said, most of that top 16 percent deserve to be there.

Yes and no. As with anything creative feedback is largely subjective. I know that on my final piece for the FFC I got some very confusing and contradictory feedback: what one judge praised another disliked, what worked for one judge flopped for another. But I get that problem here as well. In the feedback for my round one entry I had people tell me my ending was too long and too short, that the character was too bold or too meek.

I've also noticed that feedback here is not always as constructive as it could be. I know there were some glaring flaws in my story that none of the forum reviwers noticed, we'll see if the judges do. The judges have a better idea of how to address a story's issues.
