Weirdly, I can do this ok. I've done short product descriptions, social media, brochures, that type of thing, and don't have a problem switching to novel-length fiction. It's the in-between I'm struggling with - once I start writing fiction, it becomes a novel in my head. Keeping that down to a small word count has been a big challenge. And as someone else said: procrastination. Deadlines are almost a necessity for me to finish anything in a timely manner. Oh, and endings - every story I write has several endings in my head, and it's always a struggle to make that final decision. |

Great to hear that we all share the same struggles, even the really accomplished writers.
Discipline is my greatest challenge---I do ok in intense deadline driven situations (aka NYC Midnight), but when i say i just need to write every day, i don't manage to do it. Odd, because I've got decent self discipline on the non creative aspects of my life but somehow I've designated creativity as needing some special force to ignite before I'll sit down. But clearly, if i can force this with flash fiction prompts, i would do ok to just sit down and make the words come out. My second and third greatest challenges are mastering story structure and getting lost in my own sentences and not finding a way to tame them into reasonable beasts.
