I'm a new writer to this sort of competition or really competitions in general, and pretty much all my own personal works have been fantasy so I wasn't quite sure how to approach horror. Not sure if my story invokes fear or just goes to twisted dark places but I've submitted now, so I'll just wait and see :P

On the NYC Midnight main-page, near the bottom, there are quick links.  If you go to Genres it gives a description of each and examples.

I have Drama. And a Beauty Pageant. And a cash register.

My first two drafts were comedy/parody. I just don't think Beauty Pageants have any real meaning or value in today's world, even though Gracie Lou Freebush might disagree.
Pithy sayings are for the apt. For a longer message, you need a condo.

Romance is serious, maybe even dramatic. RomCom is lighter, and tends to make you smile.

I have Romance. Not my thing. But also, I can't figure out the difference between Romance and Rom Com. Any advice on differences?

Would using the object as a metaphor or simile be considered as using it, or not?

I once scored near the top of my group with a story which was required to have "a pistol" - that appeared as 'a metal garbage can lid being dropped and making a sound "like a pistol shot." "

While you can't count on that - judge's discretion after all - i can certainly say that i am not unique and they have generally been pretty lenient, as long as your usage is natural to the story

Hi Lisa, I remember you from last year. We're in the same Group - good luck!

Hey, Trond! Nice to see you again! I remember you, too!

Best of luck to you - happy to see that I am in good company this round. :)

I feel your pain.  PS is what I got for SSC.  I know you'll kill it!

Thank you - this was Dread Genre #1.

Hopefully political satire doesn't kill me first...
